How easy is it to replace a power supply on a Dell Dimension 9150? Where do
I buy the unit? I'm UK based.

I've been informed that a problem that I'm experiencing with the graphics
card is a power supply issue so I was thinking of upgrading it. The problem
goes away if I disconnect some of the equipment like the 2nd CD drive and
Skype phone.
 
Does the graphics card require a second power connection direct to the power
supply? Most cards were powered from the mobo slot, many newer cards have a
second power connection. Also, a power supply is heavily regulated and has
a total Wattage and lead Wattage limits. Do you have too many devices
connected using extenders.

Not sure about UK, but the power supply should be Intel rated for your class
of computer, and fit into the case. Some Dell PSU were non-standard
physical size and the case will only accept that size. The Wattage can be
as high as you can find, a PSU only delivers the amount of power the
connected devices draw. That is the problem with a too small PSU, it will
try to deliver the higher power, over heat and become unstable with voltage
drops.

There is some info here, for Dimension 9150.

DC Power Connector P4 is non-standard. It is a 2x3 with 3.3V/5V/12V
on it, and it isn't clear where it is going.

The motherboard appears to use standard connectors - P2 is a 2x2 ATX12V
to power the processor, and P1 is a standard 24pin main connector. There
is no place on the motherboard for P4, so it must go somewhere else.

Perhaps it goes to the Flexbay ? I'd want to know where P4 goes, to see
if that subsystem can be disconnected from service when connecting
a replacement supply.

I'd prefer to get the supply current specs from the Dell site, but I don't see
a listing there. One of Jim's links gives this for a 9100, and checking
the Dell site, the 9100 seems to be of similar construction, even including
the strange P4 connector.

+3.3V @ 17A, +5V @ 22A, +12VA @ 18A, +12VB @ 18A, +5VSB @ 2A, -12V @ 1A

It is a dual rail supply, with separate power for the processor.
That means there is the potential for 18A max to flow to auxiliary
power connectors. The 12VA (or 12V1 if you look in a formfactors.org document)
is used to power disk drives, the video card end connector, Flexbay,
and should have plenty of power.

I would double-check, that the specs in the above line, match what
is printed on the side of the supply. The supply would have to be
smaller than that, to get in trouble. There is also the possibility
that the supply is defective, if it really is a 375W and is having
trouble.

So the only issue, is P4. That, and all the physical dimension details
of fitting a Dell supply, such as whether the replacement supply
happens to have an on/off switch on it.

NOTHING.

Ask elsewhere.

No, it's hardware and it's interaction with the OS. REPLACING THE PS
HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT.

The useful answer would first discover if the power supply is
problematic before even asking where to get a new one. For example,
many XP users regard themselves as electrically knowledgeable. They
just know a power supply must be replaced because it might be a
problem and because they don't know how to get important numbers. A
lower wattage power supply inside the Dell may actually be larger if
using the number that others use. For example, a 250 watt Dell supply
may actually be the 360 watt supply sold to cloners.

Again, is this power supply defective? A two minute procedure would
provide a definitive answer - no speculation. No 'maybes'. Review it

For you, the most useful part of the procedure mean numbers from the
red, yellow, orange, and purple wires when computer should be powered
on and working. Then post those numbers here so that others with
actually electrical knowledge can provide further useful facts.

Does the new monitor controller require a power supply connection
cable? After so many replies, I never saw that answer.

Yes. BUT - replacing your PS is completely and totally independent of
the Operating System - meaning it has absolutely NOTHING to do with XP
- meaning the question DOES NOT BELONG HERE.

Please read the group title again. There are similar ones for Win2k,
Vista, 98 and ME. It's related to the operating system first and foremost.
