How do you go about replacing a single critical Windows file like NTLDR?
Computer must boot from floppy because of file's absence.

Find your Windows XP installation CD. Boot from the cd.
Once the options come up, select to repair installation.
It will go back and repair any damage to the operating
system and restore your NTLDR. Be warned that be doing a
system repair, it will wipe out any updated patches you
have downloaded. You'll have to reinstall them again.

Hi, Gerry.

Good advice EXCEPT ...

No, the Repair procedure won't wipe out any patches. You may have this
confused with an "in-place upgrade", also known as a "repair
reinstallation", which does reinstall the whole WinXP. To get to here, the
OP must bypass the first Repair option and begin to install WinXP again,
choosing to Repair the existing installation when he gets to the next step.

The first Repair option does repair (or replace) only the few files (NTLDR,
NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI) required to begin the boot process.

Actually it appears the caveat about wiping out patches pertains to early
versions of Windows 2000, not Windows XP. (See
