Replacing one 9xxx ATI card with another 9xxx... what happens to the drivers?

I have switched between a 8500LE and 9700 Pro several times. It is all plug
and play. Just change cards, the rest is automatic.

Hi all

I have a r9500 pro in my box, and want to replace it with the 9800 pro
sitting on my desk, but I am also currently using the box for work, and
don't want to lose a day messing about with catalyst drivers.

so... If I just take out the 9500 and put in the 9800, does the computer
notice and ask me to install drivers, or does it just use what's already
there and do nothing more than update the card properties?

Anyone tried this and know what happens?

I have 3.7 drivers installed, Win XP pro.

Wondered the same thing resently when replacing a 9700 pro with a 9800 pro.
Took the possibly superfluous overkill route that you're trying to avoid;

1. Remove control panel.
2. Remove driver.
3. Shutdown.
4. Replace cards.
5. Reboot.
6. Reinstall driver.
7. Reinstall control panel.

Took around 10 minutes. That's the way I'll do it from now on even if
someone here says you can just replace the cards. 10 minutes isn't too much
to lose.

thanks, tried it and it worked... gave me one of those 'windows has
encountered a serious error' messages (probably because I tried to look at
the advanced settings whilst the drivers were still being re-installed), so
it took a bit longer, but Windows seemed to sort itself out, despite my
haste, and I didnt have to do anything apart from reboot.

No real massive performance increase from 9500>9800 (but then I didnt expect
it, I have an XP 2000 which is most likely the biggest bottleneck in the
system), but the quality is waaaaay higher, 1280x1024 4xFSAA, plus very few
slowdowns. I also had one of those dodgy batch 9500's with the slight
banding interference, but this card is rock solid, cool because I am a web
designer working from home and those interference patterns were driving me
nuts when editing HTML on a pure white background :)

thanks again.

I performed this exact same upgrade -- it was a no brainer. All I did was swap
cards and 98SE picked up the 9800Pro automagically.
