I am replacing an old 2k server with a new 2k server that
has better hardware. I have duplicated the settings on the
new server to be exactly like the old server. I will be
keeping the same domain name. My question is how do I
move the user machines over to the new server (2k and XP
wksts)? I do not want to have to disjoin the domain and
go back in, they will lose their profile, but if I just
replace the server, it will not work either. Thanks.

Why are you building a new domain ? You can add this server to your domain
as additional DC (trough dcpromo), and then transfer all services to it and
later remove the old server. This way you will retain all your user
settings. Is this what you are trying to achieve ?

I am not building a new domain. How would you add this
machine using dcpromo and how do you transfer all the
services to it. If I can do that, this is exactly what i
want to do. Thanks!!

Install a new Windows 2000 server on your computer and configure TCP/IP
protocol (remember to point your DNS settings to your existing DNS server),
so that is can see the network. Run dcpromo, and select, that this is an
additional DC for existing domain. Enter Admin username and password of
domain administrator, which has rights to join the computer to the domain
and follow wizard instruction.
After you have done this use
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;255504 to transfer
FSMO roles to the new server and make it a global catalog server.
Also install DNS server on this server, so that after you remove your other
DNS nameresolution will still work.
