replacing ME with XP?

I have a laptop running WinME (Pent3, 850MHZ, 128RAM).
After trying EVERYTHING anybody's suggested, I cannot get
my WinME machine to recognize my XP machine thru my hub so
that I can network the machines- the XP doesn't recognize
the ME either. My last resort might be reformating my
laptop and installing XP on the laptop. Will XP work
properly on the machine with the above mentioned specs?
Compaq says this machine was not tested with XP so they
won't tell me I can do it. I don't want to make things
worse.
Thanks

At the very least your laptop would need a RAM upgrade to run Windows XP
on the Windows Me computer, as 256 MB is the practical minimum for running
Windows XP (and makes a difference in Windows Me too). However, you should
not have to do this.
You didn't say what steps you've followed to connect the two computers
via the hub, or whether they had worked before. I've found the wizards for
connecting a Windows 98/Me computer to a Windows XP computer via a hub all
work very well. Does each computer have the necessary driver for the hub
installed? Have you run the Network Setup Wizard within Windows XP? This
creates a single floppy disk that you can use to make the connection in the
Windows Me computer.
Search the On-line help files for Networking, and post a more detailed
description of what you've done so far so that a more informed diagnosos is
possible. At this point, guesswork is all we've got to go on.
