I'm going to be replacing my mb, memory, and processor in a week or so. I'm
running XP, and I'll be going from a Celeron to an AMD 2500 on an Asus A7N8X
deluxe. I've ordered these, but they're not here yet.

My question is will I be able to just drop these in with my current hard
drives and turn on the system, on or will I have to do something like
reinstall windows, or reformat, or ??

Thanks for any help.

I am sure you will receive an answer, but you might try
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
as questions like the one you posted are discussed at great length
there. If you are just starting to use XP, you will undoubtedly have
many more.

You can try starting up the machine with your hard drives, it might save
some time and avoid a bunch of data transfers, BUT you will end up with
a bunch of "stuff" in your registry that doesn't need to be there. Best
is a new/clean install. If you want to try to start with your drives
from a previous machine, you might want to copy the mainboard drivers
off the CD that comes with your new mainboard, to a folder on your "C"
drive (in the Celeron machine) before you swap everything. Then, when
you need the new drivers during Windows start, they'll be accessible.

You'll have to do a repair install of XP at the very least. That hasn't worked
for me on either of the two occasions I've installed new motherboards, though.
It has been necessary to reformat the hard drive and install clean both times.

Good luck!

I did a similar thing and WinXP started up ok, but "found" a bunch of
new hardware which it installed ok, but it did make me reactivate
Windows. Another poster suggested a clean install and I would tend to
agree. Otherwise you will probably end up with a registry full of
irrelevant entries. Go ahead and try it if you like; nothing to lose.

Thanks for all the responses everyone - I guess I'll just bite the bullet
and plan to start out with a complete new install. It's about time to do
that anyway.

Reformat the harddrive and do a fresh install of Windows if you want to
avoid Registry errors that will plague you.

Go into control panel and into, system, hardware, device manager then remove
all hardware from the devices list. You have to remove everything it will let
you remove because even the non mobo related hardware will have different
addresses. Once this is done it may tell you to reboot. wheather it does or not
cut the machine off and change your parts. When you restart, it will auto detect
your hardware and install the drivers for it. Afterwards you can go in and
update the drivers as necessary for the new mobo. I just did it and it worked
like a charm. After you do all of this you will have to re-activate xp.
Microsoft sucks but xp sure does work damn good.

One thing I'll add is to use a separate partition for XP so that, if you
upgrade in the future, you won't have to delete all of your data.
