Replacing laptop HD

In a previous message I mentioned that my Toshiba Satellite A20 HD is
going to die as foreseen by the SMART monitoring system, so I need to
replace it.

As was already able to take out the HD from the laptop and put it back,
I guess I will be able to replace it with an identical one (it is an
80GB Hitachi Travelsmart).

My question is: can I replace it with a similar one or it must be
identical?

Sorry for the naive question, but not everybody is an expert!.

Thank you in advance for the useful help!

Typically you can use a different drive. If you intend to
copy your old installation in a sector-by-sector fashion,
then you need a disk of exact the same size or larger.
Typical imaging software can resize partitions, so this is usually
not a concern.

Before I forget: Mountings and so are in general compatible,
but there are 9.5mm and 12.5mm height models, at least there
used to be. Today most (all?) are 9.5 mm, but make sure before
you buy.

Side note: I made very good experiences with Fujitsu 5400 rpm
laptop disks. Quiet and stay cool.

Nope, from the info you supplied such 'need' has not yet been established.

"It sounds to me ...." and "In my opinion ...."
from an ignorant lurker is all that you are responding to.
