How many hardware parts, e.g., motherboard, processor, and memory can be replaced and still reinstall my current windows xp program?

As many as you want if you are using a retail version of XP. You may have to
do a repair install if you change things such as the processor and
motherboard, but that won't result in the loss of any settings or data. If
you have preinstalled OEM you are very limited in what you can change.

I have replaced several MBs, CPUs, vid cards, sound cards and xp figures it
all out by itself. Sometimes I had to reregister if it's a big change like
an MB. But as discussed above if it's OEM you are limited and you may not
be able to ger reregistered.

You do not want to use "repair" unless it brakes.

When xp first came out there was a big lawsuit about licensing because the
license contract allows for hardware change (OEM does not). I talked to
the Microsoft people and if you have a purchased xp you can make as many
changes you want and have a reasonable number of home installation copies
running. I'm not sure what is reasonable because I have three going. If
you get more than 10 or so they might pull the license.
