I am getting a warning of imminent failure from my primary drive. I was
getting ready to do the recommended backup, when I noticed the message that
system and program files would _not_ be backed up. How can I create a backup
that will avoid my having to reinstall all my software?

The best software I know of for this is Acronis, I know their support
people work very hard if problems arise and I like the way you can
restore an image using just a CD (And an image of course)

I can only suggest this one because it's the only one I know from
experience.

You need third-party software that will do an image or clone of your
entire drive. I recommend Acronis True Image.

Try Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image. If your hard drive is the only thing
going, it makes an exact clone to the new hard drive. EVERYTHING will be the
same as it was on the old drive. Just clone it, take out the old one, and
boot to the same OS, same files, same programs, same everything.

Also, for a freeware version, there are a few different ones on the Ultimate
Boot CD (downloadable... Google it!)

I did purchase a drive copying package - DriveClone 3 from Farstone.
Unfortunately, it converted both the original and the 'clone' to unbootable
drives that couldn't be repaired with the installation CD. Is there any
assurance that Ghost or True Image won't do the same thing?
