Not Me

Hi,

2 years ago I got an aready outdated 8500DV, and was very pleased with
the result (it cost me £30) now the card is long in the tooth, but still
provides a surprising amount of grunt in my machine.

I would like to replace it with a silent, (and low-profile if possible)
card that *at least matches* the 8500's power. I would also like it to
be cheap (old/2nd hand is good).. but looking around I can't seem to
find much for £30.. even seen 8500dv's sell on ebay last week for £20-£30!

any ideas?

cheers,
Chris

Go grab a second-hand 9600/Pro/XT. Not much more power in DX8, but they
are DX9 compatible and use less juice. Over here (Finland, that is) they
cost from 35 euros up to 70'sh. Or if you feel lucky, get a 9550/SE or
9600SE, but beware of sucky 64-bit memory widths and/or slow memory
chips. If you are lucky, you'll be able to burn in a 9600/Pro bios.

I was disappointed after "upgrading" from a 8500LE to a 9600, the
difference was not that much. By overclocking the disappointment was
reduced a bit, though.

Unplug the fan on the existing 8500. It will still stay cooler than a
moderen card with the fan. 100% silent and as you know, still a good
performer with great image quality.

ooOooh... really? ;) I suppose I'll suffer artefacts/crashing long
before the thing blows.. might be worth a try then!

Cheers, if I blow my 8500 (see other post!) then I'll go on the hunt for
something like that.
