Hi,

I had a previous post about my CPU problem. I definitely think that there
is something wrong with the fan (or over-heating) - it has since become
louder than ever. How do I determine which fan is causing the problem, or
what the exact problem is? Someone (Richard) responded with a post as what
might be causing the problem with the fan. Should I just take the PC to a
tech shop and have them fix it (I'm not very good with hardware)? If I
don't do it soon, will I fry my CPU?

I know that was a lot of questions, thanks for your time.

Just remove the cover and power up the system. If one of the fans is noisy
you should be able to determine which one when the case is removed.

All of them are usable replaceable.

£20 for a checkover by a store... Money well spent - I did this with a
lock-up problem; turned out it was teh AGP port on the mobo they sold me, so
they replaced it with no charges at all.

Anyway, remove the case, see what's what with the power on.

Do you have adequate ventilation in the case? E.g. fan sucking in bottom
front, plus a fan or two blowing OUT at the top of the case to the rear? If
so, maybe you need to add some paste between the CPU and the heatsink to
improve heat transfer.

Ask in a hardware group. Your CPU fan failing has nothing to do with
XP.

Last I saw, this ***IS*** a Windows XP - Hardware group!

Richard, you just don't understand.

XP does not care or really even know about the processor heat sink
fan. If it is failing, it is NOT because of the Operating System. It
is purely a hardware problem that has NO relation to the OS.

Hence, the problem does not belong on this board.

Sorry! I didn't realize that you were the board moderator.

So, then don't answer him. I will - if I can.

Ah, yes, good ol' NobodyMan...

I have this mental picture of his bleak existence, slaving
Dilbert-like (wait, even Dilbert has a dog that likes him,
might be being too generous here) in his cubicle on a
doomed project for a large amoral corporation.

No social life,
his only release is slamming those of us he perceives as
posting outside his self-important definition of what
and what does not constitute an "on topic" post
for the XP newsgroups...

And then he suggests that WE killfile him if WE don't
appreciate this behavior.

My suggestion:

HE should killfile the entire NG, then HE won't be
so annoyed by us.

Of course you have a vision of this bleak existence. You can see your
own reflection in your monitor, so you are reminded of it every day!
