I have a Compaq system which came loaded with Win XP. Recently, when the system statrted to boot, I received the following error message: "Windows could not start because the follwing file is missing or corrupt <windows root>\system32\hal.dll> Please reinstall a copy of the above file." If I can't access the computer through Win XP how do I do this? One other problem is that the PC DID NOT come with a Win XP disc! It has a Recovery Disk, but using this disc will reformat the hard drive and wipe out all my applications and data. This wouldn't be so bad, but this is my wife's computer and she did not perform any backup activities that I know of. Any suggestions on how to reinstall this file without wiping out the hard drive?

Boot into the recovery console and use the "bootcfg /rebuild" command
or
fixboot

Since your recovery disk most likely does not have a recovery console ,
downloading a recovery console (using another pc) or borrowing a XP disk
that has one could be your only option other than reformatting the drive and
reinstalling. Jym
