There's absolutely nothing to it!

A CD drive (or DVD drive) is generally securred with just four small screws
and has two cables plugged in to the rear.
One plug is a 4 way power plug and the other is the IDE ribbon plug for
data.

So open your PC case - maybe two screws holding the left hand panel on.
Unscrew the current CD drive - 4 screws.
Remove both the power and IDE plugs.
Slide old drive out.
When you've removed the old drive look on the rear of it and you'll see some
jumpers and possibly a jumper block connecting two of the jumper pins.
This jumper (or lack of it) determines whether the drive is detected as a
master or slave drive.
Establish whether the old drive is set as a master or slave and then set the
new drive to the same setting.
Slide new drive in.
Secure new drive - 4 screws.
Plug power and IDE plugs into rear of new drive.
Put the side panel back on - 2 screws.

ALL DONE!

Martin.

you're neglecting to warn him about static...

as standard procedure you should always
1.earth yourself by touching the inside unpainted case metal
2.make sure the computer is off and the plug socket is off aswell
3.make sure you are not wearing anything that may generate static
electricity

And don't forget the Jumper position Cable Select as that is probably the
way the system is set up to begin with. Yes it is very simple. Do one
you'll be an ace at it. Static should not be an issue just make sure you do
this with the System unplugged. Remove the Power cable to the Power Supply
and just make sure you aren't full of electricity. There are anti-static
bands you can buy but really this is most important when handling PC cards
or memory sticks. The IDE cable connects to the CD Player with the red
stripe on the IDE cable closest to the Power connector which can only go in
one way yellow out.

Here is the way I'd do it:

IDE cable first position probably HD Master jumper settings
IDE cable second position CD-ROM Slave jumper settings

or

IDE Cable last position CD-ROM Cable-Select

or

IDE cable first position probably HD Cable-Select jumper settings
IDE cable second position CD-ROM Cable-Select jumper settings

unplugging the power cable doesn't mean you won't have static, most
guides will tell you to keep the cable plugged in but switched off as a
means of earthing
