I either need a new printhead for my S520 OR my S600 or a new printer.

Any ideas where to get one?

I had a similar decision to make early this month. My 2 year old S600
became useless with a bad printhead. All attempts to solve the problem were
useless.

I found a S600 on an eBay auction for $25 including S&H and took the chance
that it had a good printhead. It worked just fine and was a hell of a lot
better than paying three times that amount to Canon for a new printhead.
There were 13 S600's on eBay when I looked earlier tonight.

All that I need now is to find a source of good reconditioned Canon
printheads at a realistic price and I will buy one as a spare! Not a
perfect solution to the problem, but a solution none the less.

I saw some S520 print heads, they are the same for the S600 on EBay for $40
when I was looking, they were customer returns, not as good a price as
Michael found though. I had an S600 print head go bad 2 weeks ago also. Mine
would blink yellow 7 times which means a bad print head. I found that I
could remove it and rub on the top of the ribbon connector where it connects
to the green printed circuit board and it would work for a few weeks before
the same problem. They it would not fix again. There must be a connection
that goes bad on the ribbon cable. I have seen several people with bad S600,
S520 print heads.

Anyway I decided to get a new printer. I got the I560 for $90 which uses the
same ink cartages and has a redesigned print head. Way faster and better
with photos.

The S520 uses the BCI-3EC, M and Y and the I560 uses the BCI-6C, M and Y,
the black cartridge is the only one common to both. I didn't think they
were interchangeable.
