Find a reliable wholesale house nearby that builds custom systems.
Visit their tech dept and ask them for recommendations.

It is impossible to spec a system second hand. There are too many
variables. I usually go into the meeting with a rough idea of what I
want and then ask for recommendations for the best part to meet my
requirements. For £1k you should be getting top of the line - all the
latest and greatest goodies.

I just built an inexpensive SOHO machine at Directron here in Houston
which cost right at $300 (£160) for the basics. I had the KVM and
CD-RW, so all I had to buy was the CPU, case/psu, mainboard, RAM, HD,
floppy.

If you want a complete system, you need a KVM for under $200, a DVD
burner for $50 - which adds another $250 (£135). You would then be
looking at around £300 if you did not have to support the socialists
with VAT and the rest.

It is uncanny how it costs Brits an amount in Pounds equal numerically
to the amount in Dollars, regardless of the exchange rate. That means
the system I just described would cost you 550 Pounds or Dollars.

That's why there are so many Brit expats in Houston.

The UK is Houston's largest overseas trading partner. Those Brits
lucky enough to be sent here, stay here.

I used "KVM" as an abbreviation for Keyboard, Video, Mouse - not the
switch. The switch is known as a "KVM Switch".
