what would AVG users going to be using then?

Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free, but only so far as the latest AVG
anti-virus file. You are well advised to scan all incoming e-mails at your
end.
Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
Version: 6.0.551 / Virus Database: 343 - Release Date: 11/12/2003

Well if you are too cheap to but software. there is AVAST.

I have uninstalled AVG already and installed eTrust EZ AV.
Not sure how well it works but it's free for a year. Auto updates. Still
figuring it out as we speak.
Let me know if you find anything better for free.

Thanks,

jack

Christ, you're interested in finding out if there's something better and
you still haven't figured out eTrust?

Actually, I read it here, in this NG first and then once again on some
website (and of course I can't remember the site nor do I have the link...).

I see no indication at all on the Grisoft website that the free
version is going to be discontinued.

The person who made the statement was Lynn Pittman, Grisoft's Director of
US Operations.

The actual May 14 2003 statement was, "Version 6 of the Free Edition
will only be supported till the end of this year(2003). It is possible a
Free Edition of version 7 will be released next year (2004), but it has not
been decided."

This was substantially repeated by Pittman to another user in July, 2003.

AFAIK, no further information has been released by Grisoft.

One can surmise that the free AVG product will probably be unsupported
early in 2004 or soon thereafter, but such a specific statement wasn't
actually made.

The AVG 6 engine is probably due for retirement in any case. It hasn't been
updated since 2001 (the update is the -paid- AVG 7), and two years is about
the lifetime for an anti-virus engine.

I am wondering that myself.

Can somebody point me to where AVG say they aren't going to support AVG 6 in
'04?
I've looked and can't find anything.
Personally, I need AVG6 for my win98 dinosaurs. 7 runs OK on XT-pro

I couldn't tell 'ya. I use corp. McAfee AV software.

of virus and programe updates.

Over the years I've had a couple of FREE AV products that have eventually
been discontinued. I then think why are they offering free software. IMHO
it's to get you to buy the regular product when the free one stops.

Why bother? I'm not saying anyone who chooses free software is tight, but I
paid $30 or so for two years AVG 7.0

Surely a little piece of mind (I know AV software on it's own doesn't fully
protect, etc, etc) a few $

This 'freeware' is a two-way road. AVG have had thousands of triallists
doing all their testing for them ... for nothing. Out of this they
obtain a robust, stable product which they then sell.

If they stop supporting (ie new dat files) the 'freeware' version, then
I hope that they start to lose the community of users they built up...

Fair comment. But you don't see Microsoft giving away XP, etc to all it's
Beta testers :-)
