Working on a Compaq Deskpro 350Mhz Pent II with 256MB RAM. Its 6GB hard drive failed so a friend sent me a Seagate Ultra DMA 8 GB replacement drive with all our standard programs and Win2000 already installed on it. (this is for volunteer tax prep work). I won't go into the agonizing details of everything I had to go through to get it to boot except to say finally reinstalled Win2000 (did not format). But, the restarts would not complete without the standard Win2000 boot disk in place and that's still the case. Everything seems to be working properly once boot up and the boot files on C: look good. But did a FDISK /MBR via 98 boot disk just in case
In the BIOS, it lists the new drive, but only its size, no sector or cyclinder data listed. Should I worry? THe drive type listed is an Ultra DMA. The jumper on the HD is on Cable Select. I tried Master but no difference.
Symptoms: when try to boot without the floppy in place, get the Compaq splash screen, then the message "Press any key to view Option ROM messages" appears on the splash screen. (pressing any key has no effect), then it goes to a black screen with flashing cursor and nothing else. Ctrl+Alt+Del restarts it and with floppy in place, no problems booting. Any ideas how I can fix this?
