Hi all,
I am in the planning process of replacing a Windows 2000 Master DC &
Exchange 5.5 with a new machine. I believe I need to build a DC and
transfer all the FSMO roles over. Most recommendation I read is to
turn of the original DC for a few days to ensure there is no problem
before demoting it. As in this case, Exchange is on the same server
and therefore I can only afford to have it down for a weekend. Can
anyone tell me how long should I wait for the DC replication and how
should I check if the new DC is running properly on the network?

Thanks in advance,
Mei Ling

Ensure you transfer all FSMO roles and make the new DC to be a Global
Catalog Server, Ensure you don't lose your DNS infrastructure with the DC
you going to demote.

There is no need for turn off your existing DC in this case. Verify that
replication is working using repadmin, repadmin is found in the Windows
Support Tools at your Windows CD. Use the follow syntax:
repadmin /showreps
