I have a 2003 SP 1 DC with all the FSMO Roles on it. I need to replace a
volume on this server that hosts the AD folders. If I do a backup to tape,
then replace the volume and then do a restore, will replication be okay or
will I need to do anything special?

Thanks,

Jim

Thanks Meinolf,

I can't add the new volume first because it will be replace a smaller one
that is already there. It looks like the easiest way to do this is to demote
the server, let replication happen, and then re-promote it.

Hello Jim,

Do you have additonal DC's? Then move/transfer the 5 FSMO roles to another,
make the other also DNS and Global catalog if not done, let everything replicate,
test with dcdiag and netdiag for errors on all DC's and then start demoting
the server, NOT BEFORE.
Also reconfigure the clients to use the new DNS server.

Best regards

Jim,
If you have multiple dc's it would be easiest if this only performs dc
functions to take a full backup (Just in case) and then follow an article I
have on decommissioning a dc at:

Decommissioning A DC
