replace SATA

Can a SATA300 be used to replace a SATA150? I think the existing dead 150 is
a Seagate 7200rpm 160GB. It's in a Dell Dimension E510 PC.

I know thisn't much to go on but it's all the info I have right.
 
Yes, they will work. If your motherboard only supports SATA150, then the
drive will fall back to that, but it will work with no issues.

The OS doesn't start at all. The onboard diagnostics is return code 5.
Apparently something to do with the electrical elements of the heads. I've
not run the extended/enhanced DST. I'll have to slave the HDD in another PC.

Why ask here? What HD your mainboard accepts has NOTHING to do with
the OS.

Ask elsewhere

Except the OS he is trying to install is Windows XP, so why don't you just
go back to your homework and **** off.
