Replace Motherboard Advice

I have been out of the build your own, and upgrade loop for several
years so current advice is needed here. I need to replace my Asus P4T
and memory with another Asus motherboard and memory due to the zif
socket. I hope that's all I'll have to replace as I can't afford much
else since I bought the new Satellite M45 laptop. Advice and
suggestions on what I need is appreciated. Here is my current Destop:

Asus motherboard
1.41 Ghz
640 RAM
GeForce 4 Ti 4200
Creative Soundblaster PCI 128 (WDM)
C: IBM -DTLA- 305040
E: Maxtor 6120P0
D: Mitsumi CR-48x5TE

You'll need to say bye-bye to that one. Socket 423 is just about as dead
as it gets, Willamettes too. Looks like it'll be a Celeron D then. Would
suggest some P4P800 series board, maybe something a little better than
an -X from someone upgrading to a PCIe based setup (used market).

FWIW, these aren't the ultimate in reliability, particularly the first.

"xxx watts" says very little about the PSU itself. A cheapo noname "400
watt" PSU might be labeled 250 watts by a more honest manufacturer.

Original PSU died and it was replaced with a CompUSA 400 watt. Well,
that's what the sticker says anyway.

I realize this particular Asus motherboard, zif socket 423 has been an
issue since the get-go, but it's what I was given, what can I say.
That is what I want to replace--The Motherboard and since it's RAMBUS,
I know that is history and that I will replace the memory. I would
rather not go the Celeron route though. Depending on cost of
motherboard and memory, I might be able to replace the HDs. I live
near Intrex. They have these two motherboards listed on their
website -- on clearance. I have always been leary of anything
_onboard_. Have these improved????? Soliciting opinions here ~~>
