Replace LaCie HD - re-use their USB/Firewire enclosure?

My OS is Mac, but might be best answered here.

My LaCie triple-interface external 250GB drive has died. It comes
apart quite easily, and as far as I can tell, one could easily buy a
IDE/ATA-133 drive, pop it in and use it. The dead drive is a ATA 133
Maxtor MaxLine Plus II. If this is as straightforward as I imagine,
I'd get a 300GB Maxtor ATA133. I'm just wondering if there is any
reason I should not try this, as the IDE drive would not be useful to
me otherwise, since I'm running a G5 and need SATA drives for it.
Thanks.

Very likely that it will work fine, just match the jumper setting on the new
drive.
I would go with a Seagate replacement drive though, much better warranty (5
yrs).

Why are most Seagate drives ATA 100?

Seriously, this is the main hitch. I don't know if the LaCie
Firewire/USB controllers need ATA 133. I just know that the disc in
there is ATA 133. What problems could I have if I did ATA 100, i.e.
Seagtate, etc.

Possibly a slightly slower data transfer rate to and from the disk.

Good luck

While not sure if you would have a problem with this
enclosure, I have tried to replace a drive in another
enclosure (Belkin), 80 GB with a 100 GB (same manufacturer
drive) and it would not work. Put a different manufacturer's
80 GB in the enclosure and it worked OK. Apparently some
enclosure's electronics limit the drive size to what is
installed in the enclosure when manufactured. I have also
installed larger drives in other enclosures with no problem
(SimpleTech and Maxtor.)
