I am considering replacing my current DVD-rom,CD-R/W with an upgrade. Now
for the stupid question. Since the installation disk will normally be in the
form of a CD how can you install the new device since thare would be no
device to read the CD?
I will have to use the same 'slot' as before as that is all that is available.
Thanks,Jim

XP should install the generic drivers for the device when you boot . Then
the new hardware wizard will appear and ask for the CD if anything is needed
from the CD.

Open Device Manager and check the driver on your present device; I'll bet it
shows as a Microsoft driver.

Most internal CDs haven't needed special drivers since the days of DOS
and Windows 3.11. If your new CD comes with a disk, it's either the
manual, a bundled burning program or DVD player, or any combination
thereof. If you already have a burning program and DVD program you
like, you are under no obligation to install thiers.
