I had someone install a network for me. My wifes computer is dying so we got
a new one. I have no idea how to replace her computer on the network. I would
love to be able to transfer all of her files to the new computer via network.
Everything is routed through a Cnet cnig-914 we share a printer through her
computer. Can anyone help me? (e-mail address removed)

Depending on the amount of files that you need to transfer it may be faster
using a USB flash drive or external USB hard drive to copy and then transfer
the files or even burning to a DVD. To transfer the files over the network
it will probably be fastest to share the whole C drive on her computer
[giving everyone group at least/list read access] and then access the C
share to find the files you want to copy to another computer. If her
computer is XP Home then simple file sharing is already enabled and nothing
else special needs to be done assuming the folder/NTFS permissions also
include everyone group for allow for least read/list. For XP Pro you would
want to enable simple file sharing if it is not already or create a user
account on the XP Pro computer that matches the logon/password of the
computer you want to access the share from and a password must be used. Any
host/software firewall on your Wife's old computer would need to allow
access for file and print sharing for the local LAN. The links below may be
helpful if you need more info on the basics of networking file shares.
