I recall that I could precede a value in a cell with some character and then
the value would repeat for the width of the column.

Is there such a character? If so, what is it please?

I don't know about a preceding character but in XL97, Format > Cells >
Alignment > Horizontal > Fill will fill across the column width.

You can use this technique:

Format|cell|alignment tab|(under the horizontal text alignment, choose fill)

If you're willing to live with a lotus 123 transition setting turned on (I'm
not!), you could do:

Tools|Options|Transition tab|check transition navigation keys.

Now type \a (or backslash any character)

If you like this, try hitting ctrl home to get to the top left corner. It
doesn't work, but hitting Home will do it--there are enough differences with
this setting enabled to make me not want to use it.

Thanks, I was wondering why the backslash wasn't working....I thought I had
the wrong character.
