Repeatedly Rebooting

I got Vista Business RTM from my school's academic licensing program, and
have tried both clean installs and upgrades from fresh copies of XP Pro SP2.
The installation goes through to completion, but when I start it for the
first time, it gets to the moving green bars (splash screen) and reboots.
Starting from safe mode yields the same result. =(

Any ideas?

I suggest that you get Vista MB drivers if they exist!
You will also need VISTA video drivers too.
The "upgrade checker" checks only a few obvious things.

Thanks Pete, will try this right now.
FYI my MB is an Intel D865GLC (running a Pentium 4 2.4C), and Video Card is
an ATI Radeon 9600. Kind of old, I know, but at least the compatibility
checker said it would be fine.

Intel says that the XP drivers should be enough to work with Vista, but ATI
has Vista-specific drivers. When do I install those?

I don't think drivers would cause a boot loop, especially not video drivers
considering Vista would attempt to load generic ones right off the bat anyway.

Have you tried using the new Startup Repair? It's pretty good for replacing
any files that may have gone corrupt during install and when I troubleshot an
issue with a boot loop on Vista before it fixed it right up.

Try booting into the Vista disc and choose Repair Options > Startup Repair.
It'll try several fixes to the issue and may repair it automatically, or at
least give us an error to work with. If it doesn't work please post the error
log here.

I've tried this before, and the Startup Repair utility just kept running and
running, saying that it was "Searching for Problems..." I eventually let it
run all night and when I woke up in the morning it was still running. Is that
normal? In any case, it didn't find any problem

I'll try running it again tonight. In the meantime, assuming that it doesn't
work, do you have any other suggestions?

Ahh, guess it's not going to give up so easy? Have you tried reinstalling
already? Same effect?

You sound like a technically savvy person so maybe we can try looking at the
setup boot log to see where the error is. Boot into the Vista DVD and choose
Repair Options again, this time open Command Prompt.

Try typing:

cd c:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther
dir

If a file lists after that, type in the file name to open the log. If a file
does not exist try searching in two other place:

cd c:\%windir%\panther\
dir

cd c:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Rollback\SETUP*.log
dir

Hopefully any of those should show a log. You should see plenty of warning
columns but we're looking specifically for errors.

Yeah, I've tried reinstalling many many times. Even tried with different
media (borrowed friend's disc, used my own key still).

I found the error log, and the content of it is too long to post here so I

I may be technically savvy, but this is all Greek to me. :)

Here is a summary of my situation. I think my first post was not very clear...

I have Vista Business RTM, and I'm trying to install it on my machine with
the following specs:
-Intel Desktop Board D865GLC Chipset, with Pentium 4 2.40C Processor
-ATI Radeon 9600 8x AGP 128MB
-Seagate 320GB SATA HDD, two partitions (100GB and 220GB. Vista installed on
first partition)
-Western Digital 80GB IDE HDD available (just used for backing up stuff)
-CD-R/W drive
-DVD-ROM drive

I got a green light from the compatibility checker, and the installation
seems to go through fine, but when I get to first startup, the green bar on
the splash screen goes across just once and the system immediately reboots
itself. Going into safe mode yields the same results. I've tried doing both a
clean install and an upgrade from Windows XP Pro SP2 (before and after
running windows update). When I did the upgrades, I had the drivers from my
main board and video card installed, still to no avail.

I've tried running "Startup Repair," which didn't work (I let it search for
problems overnight once) and have also gone into command prompt to retrieve
error logs. They can be found at:

I have read in here that trying to install with SATA and IDE drives both
installed can cause problems. Try temporarily disconnecting the IDE drive
and run setup again. After setup you can reconnect the IDE drive.

Oh, when I first installed it I didn't have the IDE drive connected. I forgot
to mention that, sorry. That was why I said that it was "available." I should
have said that it wasn't connected in the first place.

I ended up connecting it after the installation and tried to run a repair,
hoping that Vista would detect a change in configuration and work some
magic... but that didn't work. No magic.

Can anyone make any sense of the log output?

I'm having exactly the same problem here... different system though...
I'm installing it on a P4 3.0 with a Radeon 9600, 1Gb Ram and 80Gb IDE HDD

It would be nice to hear a solution.

I've been searching around for errors... so far the nearest I got to an error
is something like:

Win32_Processor: Failed to create IWbemLocator object. Error code =
0x80040154
