repeated need to use chdsk p or r

After each crash, XP will boot up after I shutdown and use chddsk with
the XP CD, but then a little later I crash and have to do it again.

In between crashes, however, the computer runs much faster than before
the first crash, so maybe the chkdsk is fixing something!

Most of the time the bluescreen crash message is unmountable boot
volume.

It seems to happen only when opening a file or clicking on something
online.

It seems to happen most often after using the computer for over an
hour.

Relatedly, long processes always crash, for example searching for all
files after a certain date in XP search, or trying to do a complete
computer virus check on Norton.

I've read a bunch of posts about curing the problem, but none deal
with the need to have to keep repeating the process.

Help much appreciated!

I believe you also have to include the /f switch in order to 'f'ix the
bad drive disk clusters. Type 'run', 'chkdsk /?' to see what the
switches are, or go into XP help to understand all the command options
for chkdsk. You'll want to run chkdsk for each drive, i.e. example - run
chkdsk e: /f/r, etc. It may indicate that you need to run this the next
time you boot up which should be allowed or else that particular drive's
bad clusters will never get fixed.
Hope this helps.
