Repeated failure installing .NET FRAMEWORK 1.0 SERVICE PACK 3

This has been happening every time I run Windows Update for the last year -
it finds this "critical" update, but it always fails to install (it just says
"the following items failed to install") - could find no mention of this
error being obtained by anyone else.

Would be most grateful for any assistance.
Thanks!

This happened to me before. Uninstall the .NET 1.0 Framework and reinstall
it. That fixed it for me.

Thankyou, I did actually try that but the reinstall seemed to partly fail -
it's not listed now in the "Install/Uninstall" list, but I'll try to find and
delete anything that remains of it and then re-install it. Thanks again,

Hi Meadow,

I've had similar situations to this in the past, where an update
through WU repeatedly fails (and it never seems to tell you why...).
What does seem to work though, is take the KB article number, search
for it at microsoft, and find the update as an independant download.
Download, run, and it just seems to work. And if it doesn't, it gives
you more information than just "I've failed".

Crap Cleaner may help with the cleanup of a partial uninstall.

Use the "Issues/Scan for Issues" option.

Unfortunately, the re-install HAS failed, and I guess that means tehre's no
point trying the Service pack update - the error on the re-install popped up
in a
window titled "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Setup", and was as follows:

"Error 1935. An error occurred during the installation of assembly component
{67A0ABEE-0FA1-461F-A1FF-0C3E59C8FC6}. HRESULT: -2147319761.

I then got a message "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 setup has ended
prematurely. If this persists, please contact Product Support", then a final
message "Microsoft .NET Framework Setup failed. If this problem continues,
contact Product Support Services".

Which Product Support does it mean - where is it found? Any suggestions on
what I can do now? Do I actually NEED this .NET Framework - what does it do?

Thankyou for any help!

Oooh. Second time in a few days I'm going to suggest flattening a
system and starting again from scratch. It sounds like your system is
currently at about Cruft Force 5
(http://www.ddj.com/documents/s=7536/ddj0208q/). If you don't feel like
killing your machine and starting again, then it sounds like PSS is
your only route. They will almost certainly ask for payment information
first :-(

Start at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx and then find the
appropriate support people for wherever you are in the world.

The computer is rather old (Presario 1200) running a somehwat wounded (I
think)Windows ME - I saw that it is eligible for a Windows upgrade, but when
I did the MS scan, it picked up quite a few programs that it says wont (or
may not?) work if I upgrade Windows (including even the new Logitech
webcam!). Also, the part of the base in front of the keys became swollen and
raised since we had a severe 2-week heatwave here (in Aug 2004, 2 weeks of
40plus all day!), and it may be a bit fried. When I try the disk defrag
(which seems to only work in Safe Mode), it finds several "broken" areas.
Does all this mean there'd be no point upgrading Windows? Can this computer
be improved significantly, or is it not worth it?

ACtually, regarding .NET, I guess I made a mini-mistake, because I should
have installed Version 1.0, not 1.1 - so I tried that, but it then said
something like "cannot install Microsoft .NET Framework v1.0.3705 because it
is already installed" (!!) - needless to say, it's not listed in the
"Add/delete programs" list, and i cant find any files with "v1.0.3705" in the
title, but if i search for the text "v1.0.3705", its found in many files,
e.g.:

- USER.DAT, SYSTEM.DAT, CLASSES.DAT
- WINNT32.LOG
- config.dmp
- files in C:\WINDOWS\APPLICATION DATA\APPLICATION HISTORY
- files called *assembly*
- files called *native images*
- fiels called *mscor*
- mofcomp.log
- files in C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

What does flattening the system entail? Whats' PSS? When I wnet to MS
Support, I was directed to these forums - I assumed that meant I cant get
anyone to deal with directly, even by email - is this because the computer is
old? It was bought in the US in 2001, but I'm now living in France and our
home is Australia.

Sorry to ask so many questions!

Meadow,

Your computer sounds like it is in bad shape. PSS will likely cost more
than your computer is worth to you so instead of trying to salvage what you
have, I would simply buy a new computer and work on transferring any
important data to the new computer.

Certain application programs require that .NET Framework be installed (ex-
ACT! by Sage).
