when coming back to a slide with objects animation, PPT97 does not repeat
the animations; is this correct? can I force it to repeat the animations
every time I open the same slide again?

You can if you put a blank slide (same background) just before the slide and
come back to the blank slide. Set the slide transition to zero seconds so
it immediately goes to your slide (at the beginning of the slide so
animations work). When you come back to a slide it comes back to the "end"
of the slide. This way tricks PowerPoint without anyone knowing (unless
they also read this NewsGroup)!

Albert,
Animations can be restarted by 'entering' afresh into the slide from another slide. You can achieve this by inserting a dummy slide with automatic transistion set to 0 seconds prior to this specific slide and link to this dummy slide.
