Please pardon my stupid question but can I repartition my drive after
installing xp and if so how do I do it? My drive is a WD 250 gb drive
but shows up as 131gb inxp. I want to add partitions D,E to get the
full size of the drive available. I had formatted it in ntfs and
installed xp. Any help will be appreciated as I am not up to speed
with xp yet.

mwebsurfer,
First, the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked (grin).

How long ago did you install XP? If it's a really, really fresh
installation I'd consider going back and reinstalling it so you get your OS
partition down to a size that you like. From there you can split up the
balance of the drive in disk management anyway that you like.

If that is not an option, there are some pretty good drive partition
products available. Acronis has recently pulled me out of a jamb-it can even
resize a servers boot partition (if it's still a basic disk and not dynamic).
Excellent product. I haven't used recent versions of Partition Magic but
the older ones were good so I have little doubt that the newer versions are
good as well.

I think your answer as well as other have missed the point of his question.
He is *not* trying to repartition the space he already has partitioned. He
wants to use the space above 131GB that has not been allocated at all, and
allocate it to new partitions D and E.

I suspect that his problem is support for 48-bit LBA..He needs two things to
support a drive that large:

1. A motherboard with a BIOS and controller that supports 48-bit LBA (or
alternatively, an add-in controller card that does).

2. At least SP1 of Windows XP.

he has a 250 gb hdd that shows up as 131 gb the bios can't see the whole drive
partitioning won't help. go to western digtal web site they have 5 pices of
software
1 is floppy tools.download.put on floppy.put floppy in floppy drive.restart
pc in dos
u'll see 3 buttons.1st is format.. don't push that 2nd is partition..don't
push that 3rd says bios can't see all of hdd. this button creates over lay so
bios can see all hdd click that !!

Gentlemen: my board supports 48bit lba. My drive shows up as 250gb
in the bios. I had formatted it in ntfs. I have been able to reformat
and partition it but it stil shows 131gb in windows xp pro. Btw, my
program did not have sp1a when I installed it.
