repairing XP

Is it possible to save the updates to XP before
repairing? Seems everytime I go to the MS site to
download updates I invite in a stack of viruses?
Solutions please?

After the repair install and before connecting to the Internet make
certain that the built-in Windows XP Firewall is active. That will
prevent infection by the MSBLAST virus and the variants of it.

Also if possible download the XP Service Pack 1 as a complete package
and burn it to a CD. Install that from the CD before going online
for Windows Updates.
