Hi,
A few days ago, I lost some files, and now I can't
boot up my PC. My laptop came with XP pre-installed,
which means I dont have an actual Windows XP CD needed to
carry out the repair.

A few people I spoke to said I should try and get hold of
an XP CD to try and repair my version, or use the product
recovery CD that came with my laptop, but this would mean
that I lose all my data. Is this true?

Also, if I do use an XP cd to repair the lost files, I
heard that theres only a 50% chance of it working. Is
this right?

Any help/suggestions would be welcome.
thanks

Get ready for a major headache. I feel your pain. Been
there done that and the outcome was ugly. Can you boot
into safe mode? Reboot the computer and hold down F8 see
if you get the options to boot into safemode. If you
can, boot into safe mode, and backup your files that need
saved. If you do a system repair, it will more then
likely wipe out all your start menu items and you'll have
to reload everything. Those restore cds really suck. My
laptop came with one. Microsoft tout's the repair option
but they don't tell you that it will reset your computer
back to an inital install. My best advice would be to
backup your data if all possible and then just reload
from scratch. You'll need a lot less tylenol that way.
Good luck.
