I have searched the forum for OEM but have not found the answer to my
question, can you guys help please.

I am currently running xppro having upgraded from w98SE, but have
decided to upgrade the machine to a Dell precision and that comes with
an OEM product.

Can a licenced xppro cd be used to repair a machine with an OEM product
installed?

Tour thoughts would be most welcome.

Thanks for you input.

You probably can use it to access the repair console utility. You can' use
it to do a repair install which a key number will be needed from the retail
XP cd. Jym

FYI if you're buying the Dell new it will come with a complete Windows XP CD
capable of doing a repair install. If you're buying it used hopefully the
seller will include the discs it came with.

If you're talking about upgrading XP Home on the Dell to XP Pro with a
retail upgrade version it should be no problem provided the Pro version is
removed from the first PC. You'll likely have to activate by phone and
explain what you did.

Thanks for the post.

I was disapointed to discover that the new Dell comes with an OEM
product xppro and was debating whether or not to remove it and install
my xppro upgrade cd. Would that give me any advantages or is it not
worth the bother ?

From a usability standpoint you would see no difference. The OEM version
that comes on a Dell is the same as the retail version. It is "BIOS locked"
to a Dell computer. The Windows CD that ships with a new Dell computer is
not modified in terms of drivers and "add-on" applications. Those items are
provided on seperate CDs. (i.e... "drivers and utilities and applications.")
That's one of the reasons I buy from Dell. I'd not have a computer without a
genuine operating system disc.

From a support point of view, OEM *operating system* support comes from the
computer manufacturer. Support for a retail versions of Windows comes from
Microsoft. Pick your poison. :)

Honestly I suppose if I *HAD* to call for OS support (I never have) I'd
rather get Microsoft support than what Dell is providing for home users
these days. OTOH if you really need help with Windows, here is where the
real Gurus are. (myself not included)
