With increasing generality:

a) There's some procedure to have Windows examine and repair its registry?
What is that procedure or where can I find it?

b) Is there a step by step procedure online of what to try, in what order,
if Windows XP fails to boot?

c) What's a good book on XP, with particular emphasis on repair and recovery
procedure?
