When an LCD monitor is cracked or broken, is it rendered useless? Is there
some way of replacing the surface plastic independently from the LCD display
surface underneath, or are they manufactured as a single inseparable
component? I saw a large screen LCD monitor with shipping damage on the
front that had cracked and removed a portion of the front surface of the
LCD. I want to know if it is worth attempting a repair.

If you're talking about the plastic case parts, then yes, it is
certainly possible to replace those - IF you can get replacement
parts. If you're talking about any damage to the LCD module
itself, then no, any cracks you see very likely involve the
glass substrate and there is no way to repair that.

If the lcd panel is damaged you can get a replacement.. but simply it
is not convenient...
a 17 inch lcd costs from 200 to 250 euros (european money)...
if the plastic surface has got damaged you can change it...
or if the plastic box of the monitor...
