Repairing broken links

Is there a way for broken image links to fix themselves?

I have tried recalculate hyperlinks but I keep getting errors.
The site I am fixing is 1100 pages and there are 5,000 broken links.
 
Look at the broken links paths and if there is a pattern to the error use FP Search & Replace
(in html / all pages)
For example if all your paths are off by a common pattern
Say You have "/images/ and need "../images/
Search for "/images/ and replace with "../images/

That doesn't not fix them if they are really broken
- it just identifies them as broken and adjusts them to match your page code

Reindexes all links (broken or not)

FP stores info on all pages and links in page in it's meta data (that is the index I am referring to)
- it will not fix your broken links

Meta data-----do you mean meta tags? Or in some temp file?

I realize that this is an old question, but if re-calculating links broken or
not doesn't really fix if the link is broken, what will fix a broken link?

Use the Broken Hyperlinks report (see my post in your Broken Links
thread).
Using this report you can fix the same broken link in multiple pages
simultaneously.
Double click on the broken link and follow the dialogues.
