I'm helping someone repair their WinXP Home by booting from a WinXP Home
installation disk. I have WinXP with SP-2 and one slip-streamed to SP-3. My
friend's PC won't boot in SAFE or Normal mode and last known config that
worked doesn't boot. They don't know if they have SP-2 or SP-3. Would there
be any problem using my SP-3 CD if they only have SP-2? Should I play it safe
and use my SP-2 CD?

What do you plan to do after you boot your friend's computer from your
Windows CD? AFAIK the only things you can do when you boot from a
Windows CD is reinstall Windows and clean install Windows.

No, you can repair the WinXP OS without effecting other programs (normally)
and there is a Recovery Console option allowing you to manually make changes
to the WinXP OS kind of like we could do with DOS commands before NTFS
partitions. The repair option will replace missing and corrupt system files
which is probably the reason their PC won't boot beyond the list you get
pressing the F8 key on startup. The hard drive may have bad sectors as well.

To install the Recovery Console you have to be logged in to an
Administrator account.

As long as the version of Windows on the machine is XP home,
then you should be able to perform a repair install with an XP home cd.

If they have SP3 installed, the SP2 cd will not work...
but the SP3 cd should work in either case.

Thanks Philo.
