I know something is not right with Search. It cannot locate some files while
they are there all the time.

Is it possible to repair Windows XP Pro without going through complete
overhaul?

Let me know if posting has right topic.

Hi Alan,

Follow these steps to do a repair install which should preserve your data,
settings, and programs:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.

Note that you will need your Product Key for this procedure, so have it
handy before you begin.

I go as far as pressing R for repairs. Then it asked me whether to exit by
hitting ENTER> or hit 1. for C:/ Windows.. I think I should type "1"..but I
stopped there because I am aware when I boot PC in the past, it always make
a request whether to select Windows XP Pro or Microsoft Windows. I always
select Windows XP Pro.. I dont understand why Microsoft Windows is still
there. Perhaps I upgraded to XP from Windows (older version).

Perhaps you can say I can still hit 1 right after hitting R for Repairs
without worrying about old version. When I know I am ready, I will provide
Product Key nbr for Pro XP.

What types of files are these? If they are system files they could be hidden
in which case Search will not display them unless you turn of the Hide
options in the Views Tab of the Folder Options from Explorer. However if you
are certain that the Search function is not working then you might want to
try the following to see if it helps

Click Start button and go to Run and type or copy and paste the following
into the box :

regsvr32 /i C:\Windows\Srchasst\srchui.dll

then click OK. Next type or copy and paste the following into the box:

regsvr32 /i urlmon

and click Ok. You might need to reboot.

If the above isn't helpful then try using System File Checker to see if it
will correct the problem. Restart to the Windows Desktop. Click the Start
button and then click on Run. In the box type the following and click OK
(noting that there is a space before the "/" )
SFC /SCANNOW

You will be asked for your Windows XP CD so pop it into the drive. Then
allow SFC (System File Checker) to run. It will show a progress bar and may
take many minutes to complete. When it is finished it will not tell you if
it found or repaired anything. Just remove the CD and restart the computer.
Hopefully that will fix the problem.

If the above is not working then try a Repair Install. Go here for
instructions on How To Run A Repair Installation

Do NOT hit "r" for repairs at the Welcome to setup screen, that enters the
Recovery Console, that is not what you want. You want to start the
installer, then hit "r" after it recognizes the existing installation. Also,
we do not need your product key.
