Repair OE link for Newsreader only version

I don't know what I did, but somehow the Outlook Express version that opens
with the "View/Go To/News" command is the full version of Outlook Express,
not the news-only version (with the email features disabled). I'm not sure
how to get the "/outnews" switch enabled. The shortcut I added to the
windows XP taskbar included the switch, but even it opens the full version
of Outlook Express. Any thoughts?

Say you want a shortcut on the desktop just to the Newsreader. Right-click on desktop | New | Shortcut | Browse | C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe /outnews | OK. Then I think you can just drag this into the Quick Launch area and then delete it off the desktop.

Strange. Well I guess Diane has the last word on this. Beta's I almost never try. I got burned from the IE 5.0 Beta and never tried another one again.

Hi folks,

Thanks for your help on the newsreader switch question. I have NO clue what
changed, but when I started Outlook Express from within Outlook (2002)
tonight it opened the Newsreader version. VERY strange. I have not changed
any of the switch language or links... it just opened the right version this
time. Sometimes I don't understand the voodoo inside these electronic
boxes... But thanks again for your suggestions!

Hi George,

Thanks for your reply. However that's not the problem. The problem is when
I point to outlook express and add the "outnews" command I am not getting
the news-only version -- I am getting the full version of OE, including the
email portion. I don't know why the /outnews switch is not working. The
command line I am using is:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews

Any ideas on why the switch isn't working? It's not a big deal, but I'd
prefer to have the news only version.

Thanks...

Thanks Jeff. Yes you addressed my questuion right off. I actually saw this just a bit ago. It is easy. Actually this was hidden as one of the least accessed things in that menu so never saw it. I hear that is the way to open Outlook express to the newsreader when Outlook itself is open. Never been there or done that so can't confirm. I am really surprised this shortcut on your desktop "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews doesn't work for you. I wonder if you have any other switches that don't work? There is a difference between a shorcut to an application and a shortcut to
a function that an application provides for you. I may have misunderstood
your question. The switch I gave you is to open Outlook Express in
Newsreader mode. The protocol you gave is to open a new message using your
default Newsreader. This may in fact have nothing to do with Outlook
Express depending on what your default Newsreader is. Two very different
thinngs.
