Repair install question

Thanks to all for the quick response to my previous post! I'm still not
clear on some things about the repair install process. If after a hardware
change, you do a repair install .. is the old registry deleted (effectively
wiping out your other software) and rewritten, or just amended. Also if you
restore the registry after the RI with a previously backed up copy ,
wouldn't that undo the hardware change setup you just did?

A repair install will redetect the hardware and overwrite the relevant parts
of the registry. It won't change the settings for your programs. If you
later restored a previous registry backup then yes it would undo the
hardware changes. You'll need to do a backup of your data before the repair
install (just in case) then another system backup after the repair install.
