Husky

I had this ages ago, but can't recall how I fix3ed it. Haven't seen it in
years.

I like to search from the address bar, so just type what I'm looking for there
rather than the search sidebar

Today it's gone bad again. Instead of searching, it takes 'whatever I typed'
and converts it to http://whatever i typed/

It screws up the search with a can't find server every time.

Last time this happened I was on a P1 with win 98 about 2 years back. I'm sure
it's some sort of virus. I think I used a repair option, but can't seem to find
that option with this XP pro version of IE6.

Repairing IE won't help. Either reinstall Windows or find & remove the
problem(s):

Oh please. I've fixed this particular problem before without reinstalling the
OS. That's a last resort. Even a rollback is preferable to a reinstall.

Rolling back will probably not remove the malware. PA Bear gave you
links to HijackThis forums. Whether you can remove the malware that is
causing your problem depends on your skill level and patience which is
why he suggested the alternative of reinstalling. For pros like PA Bear
(and me), reinstalling Windows is a last resort. We have no way of
knowing your skill level except that it is assumed you are new to XP
since you posted in a newsgroup for new users.

Here are some other malware removal steps, which also include HijackThis
links:

It's the only group that seems to have any actual support.

And I explained that I cured this thing over 2 years ago on a different machine
and different OS with a repair option built in to IE. Just can't find that
repair option with this XP version.
Hmmm. wonder if add/remove programs has the option to add IE again ?

Try microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.

Here, knock yourself out:

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP:

Keep my earlier post handy: I think you're gonna need it.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
I missed the above with the 1st readthru here.
I tried that registry entry page
How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

It was useless. Didn't do a thing.

this was the problem
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {01E69986-A054-4C52-ABE8-EF63DF1C5211} - (no file)

that hijack this found

There might even be more, because I ran hijack this after fixing it, and it was
still there. Ran it a 3rd time and it was gone on that scan.
There was one other suspicious entry under java.. But unless something pops up
screwing things up, I think it's fixed.

Not surprised: Windows is what is (was) infected, not IE.

That's the CSLID for Adware.CramToolbar:

I suggest you post your HT log to one of the forums for further review,
Husky.

Problems gone. Spybot got 12 items from that thing, and hijack this pointed out
this particular item to me.

Now if I can just get my dnscache to start working correctly.. It failed from
the moment I re-installed the OS. Virus had nothing to do with that less the MS
XP PRO CD has a built in virus on it.

I tracked it down to which svchost service was running at 50%. Put it on manual
vs auto. But the default setting is auto. IOW, less I turn it on, it's always
off. But it doesn't really seem to be hurting anything to be off, things are
running hotter and faster than they did with the previous GOOD installation.
Found there are a few default services that aren't even in my list. Plus I have
some that aren't listed from different manufacturers.
I do have a huge hosts file. Maybe it's too much for it..
