Running IE6 SP2 - XP. Over the past few months I've noticed a major slowdown
in operation. Please note I have a clean PC. No virus', malware etc. I
delete temp files, cookies, history, periodically. All MS updates installed.
No BS on my machine, no kids on this PC. Yesterday, I tried to download an
audio of a conference (mp3) and it would end the download as usual but it
wouldn't be complete. The audio was 1:24:39 yet some times it would download
16 minutes or 5 minutes etc. and end as if it was complete. I could never
get the full hour and a half. It was over 20mb. I spent hours trying to
download this file.

I tried various things, resetting router, restarting etc. and then called
tech support at Bellsouth (DSL), thinking it was the connection and after
adding MS TCP/IP Version 6 and evaluating various other things, he said it
was an IE 6 issue. Now this part scared me and then blew me away; he had me
use "My Computer" as the browser. I copied the URL into the address toolbar
and bingo, it worked like a champ! How could this be??? We reset the IE
settings and he said I needed to repair IE6 but because I did not have the
disks for SP1 or SP2 (downloads from MS) he couldn't help me. He stated that
under no circumstances should I remove or repair IE6 under add/remove
programs. He said I needed the disks for SP1 and 2 to accomplish this. I
have the original XP disk but that wasn't enough.

So where do I go from here? How do I repair IE6 safely?

Thanks for your help.

How much free space is there on your hard drive?

Clear the Temporary Internet Files, including offline content when offered,
and set it to 50 MB.

I consistently delete the temp files and offline content. I have free space
of 29GB on the hard drive. Regarding the amount of space for temp internet
files, it's set to 1192. Wouldn't decreasing this to 50 slow the page
loading process? Please explain. What about the settings above this re:
check for newer version of stored pages etc?

Thanks for your reply.

If the cache gets much over 50 MB it tends to get corrupted. Plus that, it
takes longer to search through it.

My settings are "Every visit to the page" and 50 MB.

I'll give it a try Frank, thanks for the update. Is there any way to safely
repair IE6?

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378
Make sure your anti-virus is turned off.
The section
Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet
Explorer 6
works on earlier versions of Windows.
