Tons of Event ID 1988 errors on FS2 (who replicates with FS5). Event
Viewer explanation:

"The local domain controller has attempted to replicate the following
object from the following source domain controller. This object is not
present on the local domain controller because it may have been
deleted and already garbage collected."

Followed instructions from Microsoft that explains how to do a
repadmin /removinglingeringobjects and the command completes
successfully however it reports back that 0 objects were deleted.
Obviously since it didn’t really do anything the problem continues.

I even went to the extreme of trying to demote FS5 so I could promote
him all over to rebuild his local DS database but that fails because
of this object it can’t replicate to FS2.

{groan}

This is puzzling because FS5 replicates from FS2 just fine from Sites
and Services, its just erroring out going the other way. Another
explanation of how this happens is when a DC is offline for while the
databases get out of sync but this controller has never been down for
more then a few hours. Any suggestions?

Thank you
Kevin

If you want to try and demote it again do a dcpromo /forceremoval. But you
will have to go back and do a metadata cleanup.
