Renaming type PF to flowers

Pictures were lost after downloading from MARS webcam.
After doing a search, file .EXE was found and I
doubleclicked it, decided to rename it from PF (prefetch)
to flowers. I thought it renamed category not file type.
Now file is irreparably changed even after multiple
restores and unrestores. Meanwhile, AOL files are now
flowers type too. This file is in WINNT. How can this type
be reverted to PF?

What happens when you double-click the file? Does a program try to open the file?

Yes, when I double clicked the .EXE PF file, I changed
the program from unknown to printers and scanners and when
that did not work paint. This file was reverted to PF but
too late to save all files connected with this PF
(flowers) file. This includes AOL and system setup files.
Gateway (my computer manufacturer) wants me to reinstall
Windows XP. Can Microsoft help (my extended warranty
covers 2006)? Thanks for replying to a novice user.
