I search on microsoft.com and have found very little about renaming a server.
I have a server right now running 2000server and want to rename a new 2003
server to the same name after taking the old server out of service. Does
anyone know where I can find some documentation on how to accomplish this. I
just want to make sure they will be know problems. Any help you can give
would be great!!

THANKS

You won't be able to directly rename it like that. You can probably use a
swing server where you promote another server, demote the first one, then
promote the new one with the new name, then demote the other one.

Another method is to simply promote the new 2003 server into the domain,
demote the old one, raise the functional level to 2003 for the forest and
domain, then simply rename it (which is a new feature to be able to rename a
domain or a server).

Mind if I ask why it's necessary that the server be renamed to match the old
one at all?

Glad to see you're around again. I thought you went on vacation... :-)

are you talking about DCs?

To rename W2K3 DCs:
In all DFLs: you can use the Control Panel - System - Computername
Only in DFL W2K3: you use the Control Panel - System - Computername
AND you can use netdom (NETDOM = recommended!)

you might also wanna take a look at:
http://www.petri.co.il/windows_2003_domain_controller_rename.htm

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...ons/d9466376-7b7e-4236-b6e8-520337b9a6a5.mspx

if the FFL is not 2003 you can still rename the DC through the GUI,
although renaming through NETDOM is recommended
