I need to rename a printer in Windows XP. The printer is a
network printer and when I right click on the printer the
RENAME sub menu is not available. Previously under Windows
98 the printer was able to be renamed.

Hoping that someone may assist

Thanks

Hi Graham,

Take a look here:
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/NetPrinterNoPP.htm,

Try to rename the printer on the server first.
Note that the Printer Name and the printer's Share Name are two
different things and changing the Printer Name does not change the
printer's Share Name (which is what is needed to actually connect to
the shared printer).

Good luck, hope this helps

Windows XP makes an RPC connection to the server which allows remote
administration. If you are an administrator on the machine sharing the
printer, you can right click your connection and rename it on the remote
machine it will not change the name on the local machine because its a
connection. Windows 98 makes a false connection to the server and does not
allow any remote administration so you can change the local Windows 98 name
because it's contained in the local UI.
