Not a good idea, do it before you upgrade. Once you upgrade to Win2k it will
be heavily reliant on DNS you need an RFC compliant DNS domain name for
Win2k domains.
Once you upgrade you absolutely cannot rename a Win2k domain if you are
going to change a name do it now while still on NT4. Win2k does not use
NetBIOS it uses Kerberos which is an internet protocol. So everything goes
through DNS.

Choose your name wisely use a name like something.something it can be the
same as your public company.com or lan.company.com but if you are going to
use something different do it now, while on NT4 because you can rename an
NT4 domain.

Make sure you have the correct domain suffix in TCP/IP properties before
upgrade or you'll get a disjointed name space and it has to be RFC compliant
and must match exactly the DNS domain name of the Win2k Domain.

I think your reference to NetBIOS and Kerberos is incorrect. Kerberos is an
authentication mechanism and is meant to replace LM and NTLM authentication.
NetBIOS is a network protocol and as such cannot be compared to Kerberos.

thanks for the answer but my question was intended to know if during the w2k
upgrade to AD (when you load the w2k CD on a NT4 PDC). during that process
is there any option to change the netbios name?

When you suggested to change whie in NT4, do you have a M$ doc to see the
steps?

thx

Eric,

I've seen your posts over and over again asking for help, which is great and
that you came to the right spot for pro-bono help.

BUT

It's really degrading and derogatory to refer to Microsoft as such and would
appreciate the respect that Microsoft deserves. After all, would you have a
job if Microsoft didn't have their product line as the predominant in the
industry?

To change the name, go into NT4's network properties and change it in there.
If you change the computer name, you'll need to reflect that with your
workstations with their drive mappings too. If you change the domain name,
you'll have to alter that at the workstations as well by disjoining/joining
the computer from/to the domain.

I believe if I remember correctly you can select your NetBIOS name for your
domain during DCPROMO. However more important is your NetBIOS name in NT4
because the NetBIOS name is not really relevant in Win2k. More important is
what it is in NT4 before the upgrade. If you intend on using a different
domain name in Win2k select it while on NT4 because done incorrectly you
could lose all accounts because of a disjointed name space. Keep an NT4 BDC
around for a while JIC.
