several months ago my computer crashed. the tech who
helped me reinstall everything renamed my local drive
with the letter "F" instead of "C". i just bought a palm
tungsten e but it will only install to the "C" drive --
which no longer exists. can i add/change the letter of
the drive so that I can install the software? many thanks.

This results from not disconnecting the old drive before installing the
system on a new drive. Use the Files and Settings Transfer wizard to save
off the files and settings, make sure you have all your program cd's handy,
disconnect all hard drives but the one you want to be C: (if any), and
reinstall Windows. You will need to delete all partitions and let Windows
reformat the drive.

Hi,

Nothing you can do to change that short of starting from scratch. You would
also need to detach whatever got the C designation (usually a zip or tape
drive).

As the others mention, you can't rename your boot drive.
It also doesn't help to boot from another drive and
rename the drive you boot from, because most of the
changes you need to make are in the registry of the drive
you are trying to change... and that registry isn't
active.

The tech owes you this one. When he installed the OS he
should have disconnected the other drive (the one that is
C: now) so your boot drive came up C:. I made this booboo
the last time I changed my hard drive... it is an easy
thing to overlook. If you approach him with "*we* have a
problem" he should make it right. If he doesn't, you
learned something about him.
