renaming files

I cannot rename files, each time i try to rename a file a
warning box is shown "if you change a file name extension,
the file may become unusable" If i go ahead the file does
become unusable.

depends on the extension you are changing to.

you can change .bmp to .jpg without much harm (i do this)
but you can not change .bmp to .exe

I had the same problem. You have to keep the file
extension name after the name you call it.
e.g. micks birthday.jpeg
or... micks birthday.bmp or .gif

Keep the .XXX bit and it should be ok

yes, it does.. if you re-name it to something unusable.
if you rename it to jpg or bmp or gif... as long as the
color depth is not off the chart, it should remain usuable.
