Renaming computers without losing user settings

Thanks to all for the DNS help I got! That seems to have fixed the
problems (although, only time will tell...)

This company has a bunch of computers with no common naming
conventions. I would like to rename these to follow a standard (and if
there IS a standard, I'm open to suggestions!)

Can I rename these systems without losing the user's settings? These
are all part of an Windows 2000 Server AD using roaming profiles.

Also, are there any "convensions" for IP addressing schemes (e.g.
print servers run between .20 - .40; servers are .10 - .20;
workstations take the range of .50 - .200;) etc?

Renaming the computers should not affect profiles.

As to the rest of your questions, it's all your calls. There is no
"standards" as such. You use whatever makes your life as an admin easier.

Renaming client systems won't affect user profiles. If the client is small enough (under 50) I like first initial-lastname (ie jsmith). This makes it a piece of cake when you are browsing through the neighborhood to resolve issues.

As far is IP schemes go, it's your call. I like .100-.200 for users, .50 for printers and .20 for servers. Whatever works for you.
